We were not happy with using the other methods we tried to start our seeds. We are still seeing what is best for our methods, starting the seeds, and moving some to larger containers that will be given away.
You can see how we have started testing with larger and smaller containers and different seeds, basil, dandelions, and dill.
The basil and dandelion seeds have been harvested from previously grown plants in our space. We have plants dedicated to seed production so that we become self-sufficient and do not have to purchase seeds.
We started these seeds on clay pebbles and then covered them, keeping them in the dark. We use a reusable tinfoil placed over the containers that not only helps keep light out but helps to keep moisture in.
Each plant germinates differently and the 2 images on the right were taken on day 4, each morning they are uncovered and lightly sprayed with water. The image on the left with 2 smaller containers was taken on day 3.
I am making new containers for smaller sizes so that I can start many different plants, I have limited space and looking to start new plants like Dill, Common Mallow, Broad Leaf, and Narrow-leaf Plantain with a few others in the coming weeks.
In the coming days/weeks, we will be posting updates on how we make our containers and how you can find and make your own containers.
With a successful set of testing, we will be able to start offering free plants!
