We have embarked on another test with innovative containers designed for growing in smaller containers. Our primary focus remains on using recycled materials, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.

For our first test, we harvested Chicory plants from a nearby field. It's important to note that Chicory should not be harvested from roadsides or contaminated soil for consumption, as it absorbs contaminants through its roots. Our harvested Chicory will be used solely for seed production and subsequent plantings.

We collected seeds from the dried Chicory plants, carefully sorting them (image: seeds on grow media, right side, dried plant, and seeds bottom center image).

We have introduced new containers specifically for starting seeds. These smaller containers save space and do not require large volumes of nutrient solutions. Once the seedlings are well-established, they will be transferred to larger containers.

Alongside Chicory, we started Basil seeds. Basil serves as a control due to our extensive experience with its growth patterns, providing a benchmark for Chicory's growth.

During the testing of new containers and growing media, we refrain from painting the containers. This allows us to closely monitor the plant growth patterns and root interactions with the new media.

Once we are satisfied with the plant growth, we will paint the containers. Painting significantly reduces algae growth within the containers.

In the coming days, we will provide updates with new images. Currently, the containers have a covered top to maintain a dark and moist environment conducive to seed germination.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to refine our methods and expand our knowledge of growing Chicory and Basil in sustainable, recycled containers.
