🌱 Why Grow Indoors All Year Long? 🌱
These leaves in the photo may look healthy and vibrant, but appearances can be deceiving. Here in Oshawa, many fields are contaminated after decades of heavy manufacturing. Add the toxins from busy roads and the plastics and chemicals in municipal compost, and even community gardens can’t always be trusted for clean, safe plants.
That’s why I grow indoors, without pesticides or herbicides, in small apartment spaces. It’s not perfect, but it’s cleaner, safer, and gives me control over what I put into my body.
One of the first plants I ever learned about, as a child from my parents, was Plantain—both Narrow-leaf and Broad-leaf. This simple, overlooked “weed” has been part of my life ever since. I’ve used it for years on insect bites, skin irritations, and wounds. I’ve even shown people on the streets, when insect repellent had run out, how simply rubbing a fresh leaf on their bites could bring real relief. Their thanks were proof enough. That is love and compassion in action, not the empty “nothing can be done” so many are used to hearing.
This is why I grow year-round. Fresh is best, and when you have these plants indoors, you don’t just have food — you have natural medicine at your fingertips. Plantain is just one example of how much healing power grows in green leaves if we make them available all year long.
My journey started out of necessity, after a major stroke left me searching for ways to rebuild my health when I couldn’t afford the expensive raw foods my doctors suggested. By growing indoors, I not only found nutrition but also rediscovered the healing plants that had been with me since childhood. Step by step, I regained strength, reduced my medications, and kept moving forward.
Now, through FIFE – Food Is For Everyone, I share what I’ve learned because health and wellness should never depend on income or privilege. Like love, food is for everyone.
💚 That’s why I’m shifting focus toward education, for those who truly want to learn how to grow indoors year-round, for their own health and well-being. 💚 I’ll be sharing resources about vitamins, minerals, and how plants like Plantain support the skin, the blood, and the body’s natural healing. 💚 I’m building tools and guides to help you match your own health needs with plants you can grow and use.
We each have different wellness needs. My story may not be your story, but the principle remains: with knowledge, small actions, and the right plants, you can take steps toward healing and resilience.
I choose love and compassion in everything I do. Growing food, sharing knowledge, and supporting health and wellness are ripples of that choice.
✨ Now I ask: What will you grow for your health, wellness, and future?
