LIFE Community Project: Building the First Test Grow Dome for Real Change

Red Rubin Basil – From Seed to Harvest

Indoors All Year Long with the Kratky Method

Continuing our journey in sustainable gardening, we're cultivating Red Rubin basil using heritage seeds saved from our previous harvests. This ensures a continuous supply for our indoor, year-round growing system, which utilizes the efficient Kratky method. This soilless technique allows our basil to thrive in nutrient-rich water, independent of seasonal changes outdoors.

Just yesterday, on May 12, 2025, we initiated the next growth cycle by placing a few seeds into each of our Kratky containers. We'll be closely following their development as they mature and provide us with fragrant leaves for our culinary endeavors.

To maintain our self-sustaining system, one of our three Kratky containers will be specifically dedicated to allowing the Red Rubin basil plants to reach full maturity, flower, and produce the next generation of seeds. This ensures a consistent supply for future year-round plantings in our indoor garden.

Stay tuned as our "As We Grow" series continues, showcasing the vibrant growth of our Red Rubin basil in our indoor Kratky setup!
