Carolina Reaper

The Carolina Reaper is an exceptionally hot variety of Capsicum chinense. Its wrinkled red fruit and characteristic pointed “tail” make it easily recognizable, but what makes this pepper particularly interesting from a health and wellness perspective is what is happening chemically inside the fruit.

Carolina Reapers contain capsaicinoids, carotenoids, polyphenols, vitamins and minerals. Capsaicin—the compound responsible for much of the pepper's burning sensation—has been extensively studied for its effects on pain signalling, metabolism and other physiological processes.

However, the Carolina Reaper also demonstrates an important principle of plant-based wellness: a beneficial plant compound does not automatically mean that consuming more is better. Vitamin C — Ascorbic Acid

🌱 How to Harvest Carolina Reaper Seeds

1. Select a Healthy Pepper

Choose a healthy fruit from a vigorous plant.

2. Allow It to Fully Ripen

Leave the selected fruit on the plant until it reaches full mature colour.

3. Wear Gloves

Always wear gloves when cutting Carolina Reapers.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth or other sensitive areas while working with the fruit.

4. Cut the Pepper Open Carefully

Work on an easily cleaned surface with good ventilation.

Open the fruit and expose the seeds and internal placenta.

5. Remove the Seeds

Carefully separate mature seeds from the internal tissue.

An important misconception should be addressed here:

Pepper seeds are not the primary producers of capsaicin.

Capsaicinoids are concentrated primarily in tissues associated with the placenta, the pale internal tissue surrounding and supporting the seeds.

Seeds become extremely hot because they are in direct contact with these capsaicin-rich tissues.

6. Dry the Seeds

🌼 A Note About Cross-Pollination

Carolina Reapers are capable of self-pollination, but peppers can also cross-pollinate with compatible nearby pepper varieties.
