Holy Basil
(Tulsi) (Ocimum tenuiflorum / Ocimum sanctum)
A Sacred Plant with a Long History of Wellness
Holy basil, commonly known as Tulsi, is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and has been valued for thousands of years in traditional wellness practices, particularly in India. Unlike sweet basil, which is commonly grown for culinary use, holy basil is prized for its aromatic leaves and its wide range of naturally occurring plant compounds.
Although holy basil is not native to Ontario, it grows well in containers and can easily be cultivated indoors year-round with adequate light, making it an excellent choice for small-space gardening and indoor wellness gardens.
