Not Just A Food Program:
Growing Change in Oshawa and Beyond
We are 100% volunteer-run and 100% donation-based, working every day to bring greater improvements to the lives of those most in need in our community.
Every Tuesday and Friday, our volunteers prepare sandwiches for Front Porch Mentors, supporting their efforts to assist those facing unstable housing or homelessness. On Tuesdays, we also provide sandwiches for the Oshawa Picnic Club, who extend its support to people in need across the city.
Last Friday, thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to make subs instead of regular sandwiches, a small but meaningful upgrade for those who rely on this program.
But our work is expanding far beyond sandwiches.
From Sandwiches to Care Packages
At first, we focused on preparing and delivering sandwiches directly to those unable to attend local support programs. That has now grown into something much larger.
Each week, participants in our program now receive care packages, enough supplies to make more than five sandwiches each week, plus any additional food, clothing, or essentials we can access. This shift allows people not only to eat but also to regain a sense of dignity and independence by preparing their own meals.
Behind the scenes, we’ve been building the foundation for even greater change.
A Plan for Free Fresh Greens, Year-Round
With the cost of fresh produce climbing, especially out of season, access to healthy food is becoming harder for those most in need. But we believe that health and wellness should not depend on financial status.
That’s why we’ve developed a way to grow free fresh greens all year long, right here in Oshawa.
Using recycled materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, we’ve designed containers for growing salad greens in small spaces. These greens are healthier and more nutritious than store-bought produce, and the only cost is the small amount of nutrient solution needed, just pennies per bag of greens.
Instead of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars paying outside companies to provide greens for support programs, we are creating a sustainable, community-driven solution. This isn’t about profit; it’s about compassion, education, and real change.
Beyond Food: Education and Wellness for All
Not Just A Food Program is more than just food. It’s about creating multiple, layered benefits for the whole community. In the weeks ahead, we will begin hosting free weekly events to teach people how to grow greens year-round and provide education about health and wellness that is accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford herbalists or naturopathic doctors.
Too often, health resources are treated as luxuries. Cuts to mental health funding, rising food insecurity, and increasing costs have left many without access to true wellness. We aim to change that by showing that solutions already exist; we just need to choose compassion over profit.
A Community for All
Every action we take sends out ripples of change. Our goal is to replace division with unity and profiteering with compassion. Oshawa can become a place where love and care for others guide our choices.
Imagine those same subs filled with fresh, nutritious, homegrown greens, at no cost, grown and shared as acts of love. Together, we can create a healthier, more compassionate Oshawa. Together, we can build a community where everyone belongs and everyone benefits.
This is not just about food. This is about building a future based on love, compassion, and sustainability, for all.
