Terpinen-4-ol is a naturally occurring oxygenated monoterpene found in the volatile oils of a variety of aromatic plants. It contributes to the characteristic scent and biological activity of plants such as lavender, basil, peppermint, marjoram and tea tree.

It is perhaps best known as an important component of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil, but it occurs in many other plants as well. Health Canada's Natural Health Products Ingredients Database recognizes terpinen-4-ol as an isolate derived from Melaleuca alternifolia and identifies it as a medicinal natural health product ingredient.

Like many volatile plant compounds, the amount of terpinen-4-ol present in a plant can vary considerably depending on the species, cultivar, growing conditions, maturity, plant part and method used to obtain and analyze the volatile oil.

Borneol is a naturally occurring aromatic compound belonging to the monoterpene family. It is found in the volatile oils of many aromatic plants and contributes a fresh, cooling, woody and slightly camphor-like scent.

Borneol has a long history of use in traditional plant practices, particularly in parts of Asia. Modern research is exploring its potential connections with inflammation, oxidative stress, pain pathways, the nervous system and the way certain substances move through biological barriers.

Much of the research on borneol involves isolated or concentrated borneol in laboratory and animal studies. The presence of borneol in a plant does not mean consuming that plant will provide the same amount or produce the same effects seen in studies using concentrated compounds.

Inflammation

Borneol has been studied for its potential influence on inflammatory processes. Laboratory and preclinical research suggests it may interact with severa
