Geraniol is a naturally occurring aromatic compound found in the essential oils of many herbs and flowering plants. It belongs to a group of plant compounds known as monoterpenes, specifically a monoterpene alcohol.
If you have ever noticed the sweet, floral, rose-like fragrance of certain herbs, flowers or essential oils, geraniol may be one of the compounds contributing to that aroma.
Geraniol is particularly interesting from a health and wellness perspective because researchers have investigated its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, neuroprotective and cardiovascular effects. However, much of this research remains laboratory or animal based, so geraniol should not be considered a treatment for disease based on current evidence.
What Is Geraniol?
Geraniol is an acyclic monoterpene alcohol produced naturally by many aromatic plants.
Plants use volatile compounds such as geraniol as part of their chemistry for interacting with their environment. For humans, these compounds contribute to the aromas and flavours associated with many herbs and flowers.
Geraniol is found in plants and essential oils including rose, geranium, lemongrass, lavender, basil and some species of Monarda.
Its characteristic fragrance is generally described as sweet, floral and rose-like, which is one reason geraniol is widely used in fragrances, cosmetics and other scented products.
Potential Health & Wellness Benefits
Antioxidant Activity
One of the most studied properties of geraniol is its potential antioxidant activity.
Oxidative stress occurs when the production of reactive molecules exceeds the body's ability to manage them through its antioxidant defence systems. Research involving geraniol suggests that it may influence oxidative stress while helping preserve the activity of antioxidant enzymes.
Experimental studies have reported effects involving antioxidant systems such as:
- glutathione
- glutathione peroxidase
- catalase
- glutathione-S-transferase
These findings make geraniol an interesting compound in research examining how plant chemicals may help protect cells from oxidative damage.
Anti-Inflammatory Potential
Inflammation is an important part of the body's natural response to injury and infection. Problems can develop, however, when inflammatory processes become excessive or remain active for extended periods.
Geraniol has demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in experimental studies, including effects on inflammatory signalling pathways and inflammatory molecules.
This has led researchers to investigate geraniol in connection with conditions involving chronic inflammation.
This does not mean that eating a geraniol-containing herb or using geraniol will treat an inflammatory disease. Instead, it helps us understand one of the many ways plant compounds are being investigated for their possible contribution to health.
Antimicrobial Activity
Geraniol has also demonstrated activity against various microorganisms under laboratory conditions.
Studies and scientific reviews have reported antibacterial and other antimicrobial properties, helping explain why geraniol continues to attract interest in food preservation, natural products and health-related research.
Again, laboratory antimicrobial activity should not be interpreted as evidence that geraniol can replace antibiotics or other medically necessary treatments.
Brain & Nervous System Research
Geraniol is also being investigated for potential neuroprotective effects.
Experimental research suggests that its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities may influence biological processes associated with the nervous system. Reviews of geraniol research include neuroprotective activity among its potential pharmacological properties.
Human research remains limited, making this an interesting area for continued study rather than an established therapeutic use.
Heart & Metabolic Health Research
Another developing area involves geraniol's possible effects on cardiovascular and metabolic health.
Experimental research has investigated its influence on inflammation, oxidative stress, blood lipids and vascular function. A recent review of monoterpenes reported that geraniol improved aspects of vascular dysfunction in experimental animal models of diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
These findings are promising but remain primarily preclinical and should not be interpreted as evidence that geraniol prevents or treats cardiovascular disease in people.
Native Ontario Plant Containing Geraniol
Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)
One particularly interesting Canadian source of geraniol is Wild Bergamot, also commonly known as bee balm.
Monarda fistulosa is a North American native plant found in Ontario. Its aromatic chemistry can vary considerably between plants and populations, producing different chemotypes.
Some are dominated by compounds such as thymol or carvacrol, while others can be remarkably rich in geraniol.
Research on Canadian Monarda fistulosa has identified essential oils containing geraniol, geranial and geranyl formate, while Canadian research has also developed and examined geraniol-rich Monarda selections.
In one study of Monarda fistulosa grown in Quebec, the extracted oil contained more than 95% geraniol.
This is also a good example of why we should not assume that every plant of the same species contains identical amounts of a compound. Genetics, chemotype, growing conditions, geography and other environmental factors can substantially alter essential-oil composition.
Common Plants That Can Be Grown Indoors Year-Round
You do not necessarily need a large outdoor garden to grow plants associated with geraniol. Some useful aromatic plants can be maintained indoors in containers with sufficient light and appropriate growing conditions.
Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum)
Sweet basil is one of the most practical choices for small-space indoor growing.
Geraniol has been identified in the essential oil of Ocimum basilicum, although concentrations vary significantly between cultivars and chemotypes. Research examining different basil varieties has identified geraniol as one of the compounds capable of becoming a major component of basil essential oil.
One study reported geraniol concentrations of approximately 12–16% in the essential oil of the basil variety examined, while other basil chemotypes can contain substantially different amounts.
Basil's relatively compact growth, frequent harvesting and ability to grow under indoor lighting make it particularly useful for people working with limited space.
True/English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender is another aromatic plant associated with geraniol.
Its essential oil is usually dominated by other terpenoids—particularly linalool and linalyl acetate—but geraniol can also occur in its volatile-oil profile. One analysis of Lavandula angustifolia flowers reported geraniol at approximately 5.3% of the essential oil.
Lavender can be grown indoors, although it generally requires stronger light and careful moisture management compared with basil.
Rose-Scented Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
Rose-scented geranium is one of the better-known plant sources of geraniol and can be maintained as a container plant indoors.
Geranium essential oil contains substantial amounts of the monoterpenoids geraniol and citronellol. Canadian government information identifies geraniol at approximately 20–30% of geranium oil, although composition varies with the plant and growing conditions.
Its fragrant leaves make it particularly interesting for anyone exploring how aromatic plants produce different combinations of volatile compounds.
One Plant Can Contain Many Compounds
Geraniol provides another good example of why understanding an entire plant is different from studying one isolated chemical.
Sweet basil does not contain only geraniol.
Lavender does not contain only geraniol.
Wild bergamot does not contain only geraniol.
Each plant produces a complex mixture of terpenoids, polyphenols and other phytochemicals. Even plants belonging to the same species can produce noticeably different essential-oil profiles.
That means the potential wellness properties of a whole plant cannot automatically be attributed to geraniol alone—and research using purified geraniol cannot automatically be applied to drinking a tea, eating an herb or smelling the living plant.
Understanding these differences helps us make better-informed choices.
Geraniol and Essential Oils Are Not the Same Thing
This distinction is especially important.
The amount of geraniol naturally present in a leaf or flower is very different from exposure to a concentrated essential oil or purified geraniol.
Essential oils can contain highly concentrated volatile compounds and should not automatically be treated as though they are equivalent to the whole plant.
Geraniol can also cause skin sensitization in some people, particularly with concentrated topical exposure.
More concentrated does not automatically mean healthier or more beneficial.
The Bigger Health & Wellness Picture
Geraniol is one small part of the much larger chemical world contained within plants.
Its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, neurological and cardiovascular effects make it an interesting subject for ongoing research, but the evidence also reminds us of the importance of separating promising biological activity from proven human health outcomes.
There is substantial laboratory and animal research involving geraniol, but reviews continue to identify a lack of clinical trials evaluating many of its proposed therapeutic effects in humans.
