Citral

Citral is a naturally occurring aromatic plant compound belonging to the monoterpene aldehydes, part of the larger family of terpenoids and volatile plant compounds.

It is best known for contributing a strong, fresh lemon-like aroma to many plants. Citral is particularly abundant in plants such as lemongrass, but it can also occur in smaller or more variable amounts in other aromatic herbs, including Sweet Basil.

Citral is actually a mixture of two closely related compounds:

  • Geranial (Citral A) – generally associated with a stronger, sharper lemon aroma.
  • Neral (Citral B) – generally has a softer, sweeter citrus aroma.

Together, geranial and neral are commonly referred to as citral.

Citral is interesting from a health and wellness perspective because researchers have investigated its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, much of this research comes from laboratory and animal studies, so potential therapeutic effects should not automatically be interpreted as proven benefits in humans.

Potential Health & Wellness Benefits

Antioxidant Activity

Citral has demonstrated antioxidant activity in experimental research.

Oxidative stress occurs when reactive molecules, often called free radicals or reactive oxygen species, overwhelm the body's protective systems. Long-term oxidative stress is associated with cellular damage and many chronic diseases.

Laboratory research suggests citral may help influence oxidative processes and cellular antioxidant systems.

This does not mean isolated citral should be taken as an antioxidant treatment. From a general wellness perspective, eating a varied diet containing fruits, vegetables, herbs and other plant foods provides a much broader range of naturally occurring protective compounds.

Inflammation & Immune Response

Citral has been investigated for potential anti-inflammatory activity.

Experimental studies suggest it can influence several processes involved in inflammation, including inflammatory signalling pathways and mediators such as:

  • NF-κB
  • TNF-α
  • IL-6
  • prostaglandins

This research helps scientists understand how citral interacts with biological systems, but most evidence does not establish citral as a treatment for inflammatory disease in humans.

Citral-containing plants are better viewed as part of a varied plant-rich lifestyle rather than as replacements for medical treatment.

Antimicrobial Activity

Citral has demonstrated activity against certain bacteria and fungi under laboratory conditions.

Researchers have investigated its potential:

  • antibacterial activity
  • antifungal activity
  • effects on microbial cell membranes
  • ability to interfere with some biofilms
  • potential applications in food preservation

These findings are scientifically interesting, but laboratory antimicrobial activity does not mean eating a citral-containing herb will treat an infection.

Antibiotics, antifungal medications and other appropriate medical treatments should not be replaced with citral or citral-containing plants.

Fever & Inflammatory Signalling

Animal research has investigated citral's effects on experimentally induced fever.

Some studies suggest citral may influence inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandin pathways involved in the body's fever response.

These findings remain experimental and should not be interpreted as evidence that citral or citral-containing plants can safely or effectively treat fever in people.

Cancer Research

Citral has also attracted interest in laboratory cancer research.

Researchers have investigated whether citral can influence:

  • cancer-cell growth
  • apoptosis, or programmed cell death
  • oxidative processes
  • inflammatory signalling
  • cellular pathways associated with tumour development

Some laboratory findings are promising enough to justify continued research, but this evidence does not establish citral as a cancer treatment.

Citral and plants containing it should never be promoted as substitutes for established cancer screening, diagnosis or treatment.

Citral and Aroma

One of the easiest ways to recognize citral is through smell.

When the leaves of a citral-containing plant are rubbed, cut or crushed, volatile compounds are released into the surrounding air. Citral contributes the distinctive fresh citrus or lemon-like aroma found in plants such as lemongrass and lemon balm.

Aromatic plants can also add another dimension to indoor growing.

The appearance, fragrance and daily routine of caring for living plants can help create an enjoyable environment and encourage us to engage with the plants we grow.

Enjoying the aroma of a plant, however, is different from claiming that inhaling citral can treat anxiety, depression or another medical condition.

Plants Containing Citral

Citral occurs naturally in numerous aromatic plants.

The amount present can vary significantly depending on:

  • species
  • cultivar
  • chemotype
  • growing conditions
  • temperature
  • light
  • plant maturity
  • plant part
  • harvest time

For this reason, identifying a plant as containing citral does not necessarily mean that citral is one of its dominant compounds.

Ontario Native Plants

Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)

Wild Bergamot is an aromatic member of the mint family that is native to Ontario.

The leaves and flowers contain numerous volatile compounds, but Monarda fistulosa is particularly interesting because different populations can have substantially different chemical profiles or chemotypes.

Some Monarda plants may contain geranial, neral or related citrus-scented compounds, while others are dominated by compounds such as thymol or carvacrol.

For that reason, Wild Bergamot should not be considered a dependable high-citral source simply because it has a strong aroma.

Its inclusion is useful for understanding an important principle of plant chemistry: two plants belonging to the same species can sometimes produce noticeably different mixtures of volatile compounds.

Wild Bergamot also has edible leaves and flowers and has a long history of traditional use.

Common Plants That Can Be Grown Indoors Year-Round

Several citral-containing plants can be grown indoors, making it possible to explore these aromatic compounds even with limited growing space.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)

Lemongrass is one of the best-known natural sources of citral.

Its characteristic lemon fragrance comes largely from geranial and neral, the two compounds collectively known as citral.

Depending on the plant and growing conditions, citral can make up a substantial proportion of lemongrass's volatile compounds.

Lemongrass can be grown indoors in containers when provided with:

  • strong light
  • warmth
  • adequate water
  • sufficient nutrients
  • enough room for its root system

Leaves can be harvested gradually while allowing the plant to continue producing new growth.

For someone interested specifically in growing a plant associated with citral, lemongrass is one of the most practical choices.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

Lemon Balm is another aromatic plant associated with citral and other lemon-scented volatile compounds.

Its chemical composition varies, but its leaves can contain geranial and neral, along with other terpenoids.

Lemon Balm belongs to the mint family and adapts well to container growing.

With sufficient indoor lighting and regular trimming, it can be maintained indoors throughout the year.

Its leaves are commonly used as:

  • a culinary herb
  • herbal tea
  • flavouring
  • an aromatic plant

Regular harvesting can also encourage fresh growth and help keep the plant manageable in a small indoor growing space.

Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Sweet Basil can also contain citral and its components geranial and neral among its many volatile plant compounds.

However, Sweet Basil is an excellent example of why plant chemistry needs to be discussed carefully.

The volatile profile of Ocimum basilicum can vary substantially according to cultivar, chemotype and growing conditions. Depending on the particular basil, compounds such as:

  • linalool
  • eugenol
  • estragole
  • 1,8-cineole
  • geraniol
  • geranial
  • neral

may occur in different proportions.

Therefore, Sweet Basil should be described as a plant that can contain citral rather than as a consistently citral-rich plant.

This variation also demonstrates why studying individual plant compounds can help us understand plants more deeply. One Sweet Basil plant may not have exactly the same chemical balance as another variety grown under different conditions.

Sweet Basil is particularly suitable for indoor growing because it:

  • grows relatively quickly
  • responds well to regular harvesting
  • can remain compact with pruning
  • grows well under artificial lighting
  • provides edible leaves throughout its growing cycle

It can therefore provide nutrition, flavour, aroma and an opportunity to explore several different naturally occurring plant compounds within a relatively small growing space.

Lemon Basil (Ocimum × africanum and Lemon-Scented Basil Types)

Lemon Basil and other lemon-scented basil varieties can contain substantially greater amounts of citral than many conventional Sweet Basil varieties.

Their characteristic citrus aroma is associated with geranial and neral, often accompanied by other aromatic terpenoids.

Like Sweet Basil, Lemon Basil can be well suited to indoor growing.

Regular harvesting encourages branching and allows a relatively small plant to provide repeated harvests.

This makes Lemon Basil particularly interesting for someone who wants the familiar growing characteristics of basil while exploring a plant with a stronger connection to citral.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Ginger contains a complex mixture of naturally occurring plant compounds, including numerous terpenoids and volatile compounds.

Geranial and neral have been identified among ginger's volatile constituents, although ginger should not necessarily be considered a primary source of citral.

Ginger can also be grown indoors year-round.

Unlike leafy herbs, the main harvested portion is the underground rhizome.

It prefers:

  • warm conditions
  • adequate moisture
  • good drainage
  • sufficient container space
  • bright light

Growing ginger takes considerably longer than growing herbs such as basil, but it demonstrates another way familiar food plants can provide complex mixtures of plant compounds.

Growing Citral-Containing Plants in Small Spaces

You do not need a large garden to explore citral-containing plants.

For small-space indoor growing, some of the most practical choices include:

Lemongrass → Lemon Balm → Sweet Basil → Lemon Basil → Ginger

Each offers something slightly different.

Lemongrass provides one of the strongest connections to citral.

Lemon Balm provides edible aromatic leaves from a relatively manageable plant.

Sweet Basil provides a familiar food plant containing a broad range of volatile compounds, including citral in some cultivars and chemotypes.

Lemon Basil provides the ease of growing basil combined with a stronger citrus aroma and typically greater association with geranial and neral.

Ginger provides another edible option where useful volatile compounds occur alongside many other plant constituents.

This variety is important because health and wellness should not depend on trying to obtain large quantities of one isolated compound.

More Than One Compound

Plants do not produce citral in isolation.

A single basil leaf, for example, can contain numerous volatile compounds alongside:

  • vitamins
  • minerals
  • polyphenols
  • flavonoids
  • pigments
  • fibre
  • other phytochemicals

The exact mixture depends on the plant.

This is one reason learning about individual compounds can eventually lead to a better understanding of the whole plant.

Instead of asking only:

“What does citral do?”

we can also ask:

“What other compounds occur alongside citral in this plant, and how does the plant fit into an overall healthy diet and lifestyle?”

That broader perspective helps prevent individual plant compounds from being presented as miracle ingredients.

Citral as Part of the Bigger Picture

Citral provides another example of how much chemistry exists inside something as simple as an aromatic leaf.

The lemon scent released when a plant is touched comes from compounds produced by that living plant.

Understanding compounds such as citral, geranial and neral gives us another opportunity to understand why different plants smell and taste the way they do—and why researchers continue investigating their biological properties.

It also demonstrates why variety matters.

Rather than searching for a single plant or compound that supposedly provides every benefit, growing different edible plants can provide a much broader mixture of nutrients and phytochemicals.

For someone growing indoors year-round, a relatively small space can contain plants such as Sweet Basil, Lemon Balm, Lemongrass and Ginger, each providing a different combination of compounds, flavours and uses.

Safety & Considerations

The presence of citral in an edible plant does not mean that concentrated citral should be consumed.

There is a substantial difference between eating normal culinary amounts of Sweet Basil or using Lemongrass in food and exposure to highly concentrated extracts or essential oils.

Concentrated citral can cause skin irritation and is a recognized potential contact allergen and skin sensitizer in susceptible individuals.

People can also be allergic or sensitive to individual plants containing citral.

Extra caution is appropriate when using concentrated plant products, particularly for children, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, when taking medications, or when managing existing health conditions.

For the Wellness Profiles, the emphasis remains on understanding compounds within the plants that naturally contain them, rather than encouraging the use of isolated citral or concentrated essential oils.

Wellness Perspective

Citral is a good example of how learning about one plant compound can lead to a much larger understanding of the plants around us.

A Sweet Basil leaf is not simply basil.

A Lemongrass leaf is not simply something that smells like lemon.

Inside these plants are complex mixtures of compounds that influence their aroma, flavour, growth, interactions with their environment and potentially some of their biological properties.

Growing these plants ourselves gives us an opportunity to observe them, learn about them and better understand what we choose to eat.

A small indoor growing space can therefore become more than a source of food.

It can become a place for growing, learning, nourishment and wellness.
