FIFE – Food Is For Everyone • As We Grow With Purpose

Once mullein leaves are fully dehydrated, the next step is knowing when they’re ready for storage — and how to store them properly so their wellness benefits stay strong for months to come.

This is where simple actions make a big difference.

💨 Knowing When Mullein Is Fully Dried

After dehydration, you can easily test whether the mullein is ready to be stored.

Here’s the simple check:

👉 Take a small piece between your fingers and gently rub it. If it:

  • Breaks apart easily

  • Crumbles softly

  • Feels completely dry, with no moisture or “bend” left in the leaf

…then your mullein is ready for long-term storage.

If the leaf still bends or feels soft, give it a little more time in the dehydrator. Properly dried herbs last longer and maintain more of their wellness properties.

🫙 Sustainable Storage — Reduce • Reuse • Recycle

In keeping with our ongoing efforts to reduce waste and support more sustainable options, we store all of our dried mullein leaves in reused glass jars.

These jars once held pasta sauce, jam, or other foods — and after washing, cleaning, and removing labels, they become perfect storage containers.

Benefits of using recycled glass jars:

  • 🌍 Keeps waste out of landfills

  • 💰 Saves money

  • 🧼 Easy to clean and sterilize

  • 📏 Many jars have measurement lines molded into the glass — perfect for checking how much mullein you have left

This small action supports our larger purpose: helping our community learn that wellness is affordable, accessible, and achievable with what we already have.

📦 How Much Mullein Fits in a Jar?

Based on our growing and dehydrating tests:

🌿 A single dehydrated layer of mullein leaves usually fills one 500 ml jar (loosely packed). This measurement makes it easy to judge how much you have stored — and how much you need for future teas or balms.

Always store the leaves loose, not crushed. Crushing in advance causes the material to degrade faster. Crush only when you’re ready to brew tea or make a balm.

🌑 Best Storage Conditions

Once your mullein is placed in the jar:

✔️ Seal it tightly ✔️ Store it in a dry place ✔️ Keep it away from light

A cool, dark cupboard or pantry is perfect. Protecting the dried leaves from moisture and sunlight helps keep their colour, aroma, and wellness properties strong for months.

🧴 Preparing for Future Wellness Projects

The mullein in our example jar will be used for a specific purpose:

🫙 One full jar will be compacted into 1 cup of dried mullein 🌿 This will become the base for our mullein-infused oilAnd soon after, our homemade Mullein Balm

This is part of our commitment through As We Grow With Purpose — showing every step from seed to jar to finished balm so others can learn, grow, and improve their wellness with simple, affordable practices.

💚 Growing With Purpose, Storing With Care

Every step — harvesting, drying, storing — supports our mission:

FIFE – Food Is For Everyone LIFE – Love Is For Everyone

We grow with purpose. We store with intention. And we share every part of this journey freely, so others can learn and benefit.

Wellness doesn’t need to be complicated. It simply needs to be shared. 🌿💚🦋
