What to Know, What to Avoid, and Why Education Matters
At As We Grow With Purpose, we believe health and wellness must include our pets. Many plants grown for human wellness can also support animals—but not all plants are appropriate for pets in the same ways.
Hot peppers are a powerful example of why education, moderation, and species-specific knowledge matter when it comes to plant use.
Hot peppers are NOT recommended for internal use by pets.…
Growing Heat, Health, and Resilience Indoors Year-Round
At As We Grow With Purpose, hot peppers are more than just a flavorful plant. They are a living example of how food, wellness, and self-reliance can come together in small indoor spaces. By growing hot peppers year-round using the Kratky hydroponic method and our own designed containers made from recycled materials, we demonstrate real, accessible options for nutrition and health support—no soil, no expensive systems, and no outdoor space required.

How we use the plant—gently, intentionally, and with clear boundaries
As We Grow With Purpose means we do not just grow plants—we learn how to use them responsibly and when they truly belong in a wellness plan. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is already part of our growing space for human wellness. This article documents how the plant itself may be used for pets, focusing on traditional, low-impact methods that respect the sensitivity of animals.
This is about supportive care, not treatment or replacement for veterinary guidance.
For pet wellness, mullein use is intentionally limited.
🌿 Leaves – primary part used for pets
🌼 Flowers – used only in specific external preparations
🌾 Seeds – not used for pets
Leaves are harvested young to mid-mature, dried slowly, and stored cleanly.
(Methods, not dosages — always guided and conservative)🌬️ 1. Mullein Leaf Tea (Infusion) – Internal Support
Purpose:
Traditionally used to support:
Mild, occasional coughing
Throat and airway irritation
Seasonal respiratory discomfort
How it’s prepared (high-level):
Dried mullein leaves are steeped gently in hot water
The liquid is thoroughly strained (this step is critical)
Only the clear liquid is used
⚠️ Fine leaf hairs must be fully removed, as they can irritate the throat if not strained properly.
How it’s used for pets:
Offered in very small amounts
Mixed with food or water if advised
Used short-term and observationally
Purpose:
Supports respiratory comfort through moisture rather than ingestion.
How it’s used:
A mild mullein tea may be prepared
The pet is allowed to rest nearby while warm steam disperses into the air
The pet is never forced into direct steam
This method is often preferred for pets who should not ingest herbs.
Purpose:
Traditionally associated with:
Gentle ear comfort
Soothing non-infectious ear irritation
How it’s prepared (overview):
Mullein flowers (sometimes combined with leaves) are slowly infused into a carrier oil
The oil is carefully strained and stored
⚠️ Important cautions:
Ear issues can have many causes
Oil should never be used if infection, discharge, or pain is present
Professional guidance is strongly recommended
Purpose:
Occasionally used for:
Localized soothing
Comfort support without ingestion
How it’s used:
A clean cloth is soaked in strained mullein tea
Applied externally to the area of concern
Never applied to open wounds
Purpose also means knowing what to avoid.
No essential oils for pets
No alcohol-based extracts
No concentrated dosing
No long-term daily use
No use for serious or unexplained symptoms
“Natural” does not mean “automatically safe.”
These methods reflect our guiding principles:
🌱 Low intervention
🧠 Education-first
🐾 Respect for animal sensitivity
⚖️ Clear limits and accountability
We grow once, learn deeply, and apply only where appropriate.
By growing mullein ourselves, we:
Control quality and cleanliness
Understand harvesting timing
Avoid unnecessary additives
Decide if use is appropriate—not just how
This is not about maximizing use. It’s about right use.
Mullein teaches us to slow down, soften our approach, and pay attention. When we use it for pets, we do so with humility—observing carefully, using minimally, and always choosing the path of least harm.
As We Grow With Purpose, we use with responsibility.
