A Major Test for Basil Growth: Tracking 12 Containers

Our latest effort focuses on testing 12 containers of Basil, closely monitoring their progress from germination to their final stage in larger containers, where they will be shared with others. Each container in this test was seeded with five heritage seeds from our own collection. As of November 23, 2024, about half of the containers show signs of germination, with one seed already sprouting clearly in the middle image. We are excited to follow these 12 containers as they grow into full plants ready for harvest.

Expanding Efforts: Echinacea, Mint, and Carrots

In addition to the Basil test, we planted seeds for:

  • Echinacea: Eight containers seeded from a local Oshawa garden. Though planted later in the season, we hope to see germination in the coming days.
  • Mint: Four containers seeded to explore growth potential for future seed production.
  • Carrots: Four containers using seeds purchased a few years ago. This is another test to assess the viability of older seeds for long-term production.

Progress and Next Steps

All seeds in this tray were planted on November 21, 2024, and the accompanying images were captured on November 23, 2024. Our goal is not only to nurture these plants but also to evaluate their potential for harvesting and future seed production.

By observing how each plant variety progresses, we’re refining our methods to grow stronger, healthier plants. We’re excited to share updates as these containers develop, and we look forward to providing plants to support our community through this process.

Stay tuned as we continue our journey in sustainable, small-scale gardening.
