Our Journey and Findings
In our ongoing efforts to enhance seed production, we've explored various methods to boost germination success. After testing several ideas and making minor adjustments, we’ve identified effective strategies that show promise.
Maintaining Humidity
Container Setup
Currently, we are using two different types of covered lids for our seed containers. In one setup, shown in the image on the right, we have four large containers alongside some smaller ones. The image on the left features a new design with 18 spaces for small containers, complete with a layer of a water and nutrient solution mix at the bottom. This setup encourages the roots to grow downward, promoting healthy seedling development.
Seed Varieties
We’ve begun our germination trials with several seed types: Habanero peppers, Common Mallow, Hickory, and Lettuce. For each variety, we plan to cultivate two containers to monitor their growth closely. As the seeds germinate and develop, we’ll transfer the seedlings into larger containers for the remainder of their growth cycle.
Bucket-Style Containers
To maximize efficiency, we’ve designed bucket-style containers capable of holding four to five small seedling containers. These will be used to grow plants of the same type started simultaneously, facilitating a continuous supply of fresh produce for consumption or for creating herbal teas, powders, and spices.
Documenting Our Process
We aim to share our findings through a series of content pieces titled "As We Grow," where we’ll document the progress of each plant type. This will include insights into the germination process, growth stages, and the various uses of the plants we cultivate.
Stay tuned as we delve deeper into our seed production journey, sharing the why and how behind our methods and the healthy options they provide!
