Trials and Testing:

Growing and Designing in Limited Space

As I continue to develop and expand my space to cultivate plants, I’m excited to share the ongoing efforts to design a system that not only supports the growth of various plants but also helps others replicate these methods in their own limited spaces. The goal is to create a simple, low-cost, and sustainable way for people to grow plants, using recycled materials wherever possible, while also providing support for those who need it most.

One of the key aspects of my current designs is maximizing space and efficiency. Through testing, I’ve discovered that plants can thrive together, and some require less room for their nutrient solutions than others. By grouping plants with different needs and growth stages, I can make the most of the space available and ensure healthy, productive growth.

The latest phase of my project involves designing tops for containers in various sizes that can fit together. Some of these tops will have three spaces for planting, others two, and some will have just one. The goal is to create a flexible system that allows for different plant types and stages of growth to coexist in the same area.

In the coming days, I’ll be painting the containers and finalizing the tops. Once these steps are completed, I’ll be preparing for a new round of seeds to germinate. There will be a couple of test plants in the new containers to ensure the designs work effectively. This process will help fine-tune the system and verify that these methods can be easily duplicated.

In addition to my plant-growing efforts, I’ve also been focused on expanding the LIFE Community Program, “Not Just A Food Program,” in Oshawa. We’ve recently added another day each week for free lunches, further extending our support to the local community.

It’s been a busy period of growth and learning, both with the plants and the program. As always, the journey is a work in progress, and I’m excited to continue experimenting, improving, and sharing the results with others. Stay tuned for more details and photos as I prepare for the next stage of this project. It’s a process of continuous learning, and I look forward to sharing these insights as I go.
