Experimenting with New Growth Methods: Repurposing Containers for Better Results
As we refine our seed germination process, we’re moving forward with testing new methods to allow continued growth beyond the initial stages. These experiments aim to support plants until they’re ready to move into larger containers with full-strength nutrient solutions, encouraging stronger root systems and healthier plants.
In line with our commitment to sustainability and reuse, we’ve repurposed medium-sized margarine tubs for this phase of testing. By cutting three snug-fitting holes into the lid, we can securely hold smaller containers with germinated plants while keeping the nutrient solution filled to the brim inside the tub.
Testing Growth in Reduced Humidity
For this test, we’ve removed the coverings from the plants, exposing them to reduced humidity levels. This will help us assess whether the plants can adapt to these conditions and thrive. Ideally, this setup could serve as a permanent solution for growing plants until they’re harvested for use.
For plants earmarked for consumption rather than seed production, we’re also exploring how to optimize this container setup for ongoing growth. Alongside this, we’re monitoring:
- Root development: Observing how plants respond to the depth and width of the medium-sized tubs.
- Algae growth: Ensuring the system remains manageable and clean.
- Nutrient and water use: Keeping track of how much liquid is consumed as the plants mature.
Exploring Container Sizes and Plant Groupings
In addition to medium-sized tubs, we’ll test different tub sizes to evaluate how root systems respond to varying depths. We’re also examining the impact of grouping multiple plants in a single tub. For this experiment, we’ve placed three containers in one medium-sized tub: two with Cilantro and one with Sweet Grass.
Expanding Our Efforts
This trial is part of a broader initiative to double our seed production and expand our testing space. We’re excited to see how these plants grow in their new environment and will provide regular updates through our As We Grow series.
Stay tuned for insights into the growth journey of these Cilantro and Sweet Grass plants, along with tips and findings that might inspire your own growing practices.
