π± Seeds Of Hope β Starting Small, Building With Purpose, and Growing Together!
One of our goals with Seeds Of Hope is to make growing your own plants as affordable and accessible as possible, especially for those with limited space or financial resources.
We have been testing and designing growing containers using commonly available recycled materials. Not only does this help reduce costs, but it also gives materials another purpose instead of sending them to waste.
π± Two Recycled Water Bottles, One Growing Container!
The containers we have designed use two recycled 4-litre water bottles to create one complete growing system.
Our design needed to meet several practical needs:
-
Affordable and accessible: Made using recycled materials that are relatively easy to find.
-
Easy to move: Designed so plants can be picked up and transported with less difficulty.
-
Self-watering assistance: A small cotton rope runs through the centre of the soil container and into the water reservoir below. The rope acts as a wick, drawing moisture upward to help keep the soil hydrated and reduce how often watering is needed.
-
Removable growing section: The soil-filled section sits inside the water reservoir and can be lifted out when needed for maintenance, watering, harvesting or moving.
-
Protective sleeve: A removable cover serves more than one purpose throughout the growing process.
-
Adaptable design: Although we are currently using soil as our growing medium, the design can also be modified for certain hydroponic growing methods.
π± One Protective Sleeve, Multiple Purposes!
We designed a removable sleeve that fits over the upper growing section.
When seeds are first planted, the sleeve can help retain moisture and warmth, creating a more favourable environment for germination.
Once the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have begun developing their true leaves, the sleeve can be removed to allow better airflow and growing space.
Because we plan to bring plants to Seeds Of Hope events and other activities, the sleeve also provides a practical way to help protect young plants during transportation.
It is important to provide appropriate ventilation and avoid excessive heat or moisture, particularly while the seedlings are developing.
π± Why Build Our Own Containers?
Not everyone has access to free flowerpots, gardening supplies or the money to purchase everything needed to start growing.
Sometimes, even a few dollars can be a barrier.
By learning how to make growing containers from recycled materials, we can reduce some of those costs while sharing practical skills that others can use.
There is also something rewarding about creating something yourself, planting a seed and watching it grow in a container you built with your own hands.
Our design reflects our particular needs, but yours may be different. That is part of what Seeds Of Hope is about: sharing knowledge, exploring options and discovering what works best for you.
π± We Are Just Getting Started!
We have the seeds. We are building the containers. The next steps include adding the soil, planting and growing.
I have been growing plants indoors in an apartment for many years. It has also been many years since I had a traditional outdoor garden.
Limited space does not necessarily mean limited opportunities.
Through Seeds Of Hope, I will share what brought me to this journey, what I have learned, what has worked, what has not, and how others can explore growing plants for their own health and wellness interests.
We are starting with 15 different plants, each with its own purpose and opportunities to learn.
π± Growing Opportunities Beyond the Plants
This is about more than growing a few plants.
As Seeds Of Hope develops, we are also building opportunities through The Hope Collective, where participants can learn, grow and potentially share what they produce, helping increase the variety of plants and resources available to one another.
For those genuinely struggling with the costs of getting started, we are developing fundraising opportunities to help cover some or all of the necessary materials.
We also have plans to introduce optional entrepreneurial opportunities for those interested in developing skills and potentially earning income through some of these activities.
Not everyone will want to participate in every opportunity, and that is perfectly fine. Participation will be a choice.
π Knowledge Should Not Be Another Financial Barrier.
We are not telling anyone what they must do. We are showing what we are doing, explaining why, and sharing the knowledge so others can make their own informed choices.
Sometimes, better access to health and wellness opportunities can begin with something as simple as two recycled water bottles, a little soil and a seed.
π± Seeds Of Hope β Start Small. Learn. Build. Grow. Share.
You are invited to discover more through our upcoming Seeds Of Hope events, including opportunities to participate through video chats if attending in person is not possible.
This is only the beginning of a much larger journey, built with purpose, love and compassion for all.
LIFE β Love Is For Everyone.
