Clothing With Purpose

Clothing With Purpose is an ILFJL Collective community and fundraising effort designed to give donated clothing a greater purpose through affordable access, free community support, paid opportunities, and sustainable fundraising.

Rather than operating as a traditional clothing store or simply collecting clothing to give away, Clothing With Purpose creates several pathways for donated clothing to benefit the community.

The goal is simple:

Keep useful clothing moving, keep it affordable, provide it free when there is an identified need, create opportunities for people facing barriers, and use funds raised to strengthen our wider community efforts.

Affordable Clothing

Clothing offered publicly will generally be priced at $3, $2, or $1.

Items may begin at the higher price and gradually be reduced when they remain available. Over time, clothing may be reduced below $1 or moved into our free distribution efforts.

These intentionally low prices help make clothing accessible while allowing purchases to contribute small amounts toward our larger fundraising work.

The purpose is not to maximize the selling price of donated clothing. It is to find the best way for each item to continue being useful.

Free Access Through the Not Just A Food Program

Individuals directly supported through the Not Just A Food Program can access available Clothing With Purpose items free of charge, regardless of the price currently posted publicly.

Someone who needs an available $3 item does not have to wait for that item to eventually become $1 or free.

When we have an appropriate item available and an identified client needs it, the need takes priority over the sale.

This allows Clothing With Purpose to operate as both an affordable public clothing option and a direct source of free clothing for people we are already supporting.

LIFE Community Partner Access

Approved LIFE Community Partners can help connect available clothing with people they are directly assisting.

Where appropriate, partners may have access to donated clothing before it is publicly listed for sale.

If we receive an item and already know someone needs it, there is little value in making that person wait while the clothing moves through a public sales process.

This allows trusted community connections to help us move clothing directly from donation to identified need.

Free Clothing Days

Clothing that remains available after moving through our affordable pricing can eventually become part of Free Clothing Days.

These events provide another opportunity for clothing to reach people at no cost while helping us keep inventory moving and make room for new donations.

We do not want usable clothing sitting indefinitely in storage.

The purpose of clothing is to be used.

Sharing Remaining Clothing With Other Organizations

Items remaining after our own free distribution efforts can be offered free to other organizations, groups, or community efforts that can distribute them to people who need them.

Our requirement is that clothing transferred free for community distribution is not subsequently sold for profit.

We do not have to personally distribute every item for Clothing With Purpose to succeed.

If another community effort can responsibly put that clothing into someone's hands for free, the clothing is still serving its purpose.

Creating Paid Opportunities

Clothing With Purpose is also intended to create paid opportunities for individuals who may themselves be facing financial or other barriers.

Operating the effort involves real work: receiving donations, sorting, washing, inspecting, folding, photographing, listing, organizing, packing, distributing, and promoting clothing.

As the fundraising model develops, specific work can provide opportunities for individuals to earn money for the work they complete.

This reflects an important part of the ILFJL Collective approach.

Support can include providing something someone needs, but it can also include creating an opportunity for someone to participate, contribute, gain experience, and earn income.

Part of Supporting Direct Needs

A percentage of funds generated through Clothing With Purpose will become part of our wider fundraising structure, including Supporting Direct Needs.

Supporting Direct Needs helps us respond to specific needs identified within our community when donated resources alone are not enough.

Sometimes the exact item someone needs is already available.

Sometimes it is not.

Fundraising provides another option when waiting for the right donation could leave someone without something they genuinely need.

Clothing With Purpose therefore becomes one of several fundraising efforts working together rather than operating as a separate program.

Part of the Just Oshawa Marketing Team

Clothing With Purpose will also be connected to the broader Just Oshawa fundraising and marketing team.

Instead of building a different promotional system around every fundraiser, our goal is to develop a connected marketing structure supporting Clothing With Purpose, Supporting Direct Needs, and other Just Oshawa fundraising initiatives.

A percentage of fundraising revenue can help support this work and create paid opportunities for people participating in specific marketing, promotion, outreach, and fundraising activities.

As additional fundraising efforts develop, they can contribute to the same larger system.

Supporting the Larger ILFJL Collective Vision

Clothing With Purpose connects immediate community needs with the longer-term work of the ILFJL Collective.

Funds generated through the overall fundraising structure can help strengthen current efforts such as the Not Just A Food Program, address identified needs through Supporting Direct Needs, create paid opportunities, and contribute toward the development of Wellness Without Barriers.

It creates a cycle in which one donated item can have several possible purposes:

Affordable clothing → Free clothing for an identified need → Community redistribution → Paid opportunities → Fundraising → Supporting Direct Needs → Building stronger community programs.

Not every piece of clothing will travel through every part of that cycle, and it does not need to.

The objective is to find the most useful purpose for the resources we receive.

Why Clothing With Purpose?

Because a donated shirt can be worth more than $3.

Its value might be providing someone with affordable clothing.

Its value might be keeping someone warm for free.

Its value might be creating a few dollars of paid work for someone struggling financially.

Its value might be helping fund another person's direct need.

Or its value might simply be passing from one person who no longer needs it to another person who does.

That is Clothing With Purpose: making the greatest practical community use possible from the clothing and resources entrusted to us.
