💚 ILFJL Collective – Building Pathways Towards Independence, Opportunity and Long-Term Stability
From the beginning, one of my goals has been to create programs that go beyond providing immediate assistance. I want to build opportunities that help individuals develop skills, gain knowledge, generate their own income and work towards becoming more self-sufficient.
This has always been part of my vision for the LIFE Transitional Housing Project.
Transitional housing should be more than providing someone with a temporary place to live. It should also offer opportunities to build the confidence, practical skills and financial stability needed to eventually move into long-term, independent housing without ongoing dependence on support services.
I understand this approach will not work for everyone. We all face different challenges, circumstances and barriers. However, I believe we need to create more pathways for those who want the opportunity to move forward.
And I want to make something very clear: I am not building all of this from a position of financial security.
I have struggled greatly throughout these efforts. I am not financially set, and I face many of the same challenges as those living in poverty or just above the poverty line.
That line between getting by and falling behind can be incredibly thin. One unexpected expense, one health challenge or one change in circumstances can make an enormous difference.
I know this reality because I have lived it, and I continue to face financial challenges while building these programs.
I am not someone sitting comfortably with financial resources, telling others how they should improve their lives. I am someone who has experienced homelessness, serious health challenges and financial hardship, and who continues working to create opportunities despite those barriers.
What I do have is confidence in my abilities, determination and a willingness to learn.
I have always found ways to move forward through adversity. That does not mean every effort succeeds or that the journey has been easy. There have been setbacks, delays and times when I have had to completely rethink my approach.
But I do not give up on my goals.
When I do not know something, I seek out the knowledge. I research, experiment, learn from mistakes and continue improving.
And sometimes, life itself presents opportunities to learn lessons we never expected.
My major stroke in 2021 and open-heart surgery in 2022 were two of those experiences. They were not the first major challenges I have faced, and I doubt they will be the last.
Those experiences changed my life, but they also expanded my understanding of health, wellness, accessibility, recovery and the barriers people face when trying to rebuild their lives.
I had to relearn things many people take for granted. I had to adapt, rebuild my confidence and discover new ways of accomplishing my goals.
Those experiences did not end my determination. They strengthened my purpose.
They helped shape the greater emphasis I now place on health, wellness, personal responsibility and creating realistic opportunities for people facing difficult circumstances.
That is part of what I have been building through the ILFJL Collective for more than seven years.
Rather than creating programs that operate independently, I have been developing ways for different activities to connect, allowing participants to start small, learn new skills and potentially turn those skills into employment or small business opportunities.
You are beginning to see some of these connections taking shape.
🌱 FIFE – Food Is For Everyone and Seeds Of Hope
Learning to grow plants indoors is about more than gardening. It can create opportunities to develop practical skills, understand nutrition, produce plants and explore small-scale growing businesses.
Our developing plant subscription model is one example of how a relatively small growing space could eventually provide an opportunity to earn additional income.
🎨 Crafted With Purpose
Learning to create products can open doors to income-generating opportunities. These could include stickers, personalized items, artwork, botanical products and other handmade creations.
Crafted With Purpose is being developed to help connect those skills with opportunities to promote and market products, potentially allowing participants to develop their own small businesses.
🌿 Plant-Based Products and Wellness
The knowledge gained through our Plant Profiles and growing activities can lead to further learning opportunities involving herbs, teas, spices and other plant-based products.
The goal is to connect education with practical applications while helping participants understand the requirements involved in creating products for others.
👕 LIFE Clothing
This is another area where I have been developing a model that could create opportunities for those who need them most.
I have not made all the details public yet. Part of my concern is ensuring that the model remains focused on creating opportunities for participants rather than simply becoming another business where the financial benefits remain with those already in a position to profit.
📣 Marketing, Photography and Community Promotions
Through Just Oshawa, Inspiring Times and our other activities, there are opportunities to learn about photography, content creation, social media, product promotion and community marketing.
These are skills that can have value beyond the ILFJL Collective, including potential employment, freelance work and independent business opportunities.
The important connection is that one opportunity can lead to another.
Someone might begin by attending a free growing event, learn to produce plants, develop products from what they grow and eventually explore selling those products.
Another person might discover an interest in photography, design, clothing or marketing and develop skills that help them create their own source of income.
Not everyone will want to own a business. Some may prefer employment, part-time income or simply learning skills that make everyday life more manageable.
The goal is to create choices, not force everyone down the same path.
I have been building these programs gradually, testing ideas, learning what works and making adjustments along the way. Some opportunities are already taking shape, while others remain in development.
And much of this work has been happening while I manage my own financial limitations, health challenges and everyday responsibilities.
There are days when progress is slower than I would like. There are things I would love to accomplish tomorrow that will take months or even years because the resources are simply not there yet.
But I have learned something important throughout my life.
Having limited financial resources does not mean having limited abilities, knowledge, creativity or determination.
I have faith in my ability to continue building what I have envisioned. I thrive when faced with adversity because it challenges me to learn, adapt and discover solutions I might never have considered otherwise.
I believe these programs will become a reality. I cannot promise exactly when every part will be completed, but I know I will continue working towards those goals.
And I am not asking anyone to do something I am unwilling to do myself.
I am learning, building, adapting and working towards greater financial independence through many of the same opportunities I hope to make available to others.
This is why I believe transitional housing needs to be connected to more than housing alone.
Imagine someone entering a program with very little financial security, having opportunities to develop skills, earn income, build savings and eventually move into permanent housing with a stronger foundation for maintaining their independence.
That is the direction I want the LIFE Transitional Housing Project to take.
I am not promising that everyone who participates will become financially independent. There are real barriers involving health, housing, affordability, accessibility and individual circumstances that cannot be ignored.
But without opportunities to learn, earn and grow, how can we expect people to move beyond the circumstances they are struggling with?
One of the most rewarding things about learning something new is knowing that I can share that knowledge with someone else.
What I learn, I can teach. What someone else learns, they may eventually teach to another.
That is how opportunities can continue to grow beyond my own involvement.
Confidence grows through experience. Independence grows through opportunity. And long-term stability becomes more achievable when people have the tools, knowledge and resources to support themselves.
I believe that when individuals begin to feel more secure in their lives, they have greater opportunities to focus on their health, wellness, relationships and happiness.
For me, this is not simply a collection of programs or a business plan. It is how I choose to live my life.
Every day, I make a conscious effort to live with love and compassion for all.
That does not mean ignoring difficult truths, avoiding responsibility or pretending that every problem has an easy solution.
It means recognizing that people face real challenges, understanding that circumstances differ and doing what I can to create opportunities rather than simply talking about what should be done.
I have experienced enough adversity throughout my life to understand how quickly circumstances can change.
I have also learned that even during the most difficult times, there can be opportunities to grow, discover something new and find another path forward.
I cannot change everything, and I cannot help everyone. But I can continue building something that creates opportunities for those who want them.
There is still much work ahead. I know there will be more challenges, more lessons and more adjustments along the way.
But I have come too far, learned too much and invested too much of my life into this vision to stop moving forward.
💚 LIFE – Love Is For Everyone.
More than words. More than temporary assistance. Building opportunities through love, compassion, knowledge, determination and personal responsibility.
Start small. Learn. Grow. Earn. Build towards independence.
I am living that process myself, every single day.
And if what I learn through my own struggles can help someone else find a better path forward, then those experiences can have a purpose beyond my own life.
That is the foundation I am building through the ILFJL Collective, for our community of Oshawa and beyond.
Freely sharing knowledge. Creating opportunities. Building a future where more people have a chance to thrive, not simply survive.
