Bringing Love and Compassion to Oshawa’s Most Vulnerable
As our support base grows, we are preparing to introduce a new weekly initiative: offering free sandwiches, water, and snacks to those in need. However, our efforts are met with an unfortunate obstacle. Our city has implemented a by-law that prohibits distributing any items, including food, on public sidewalks or in parks. Violators face steep fines, some accumulating thousands of dollars, as they await their day in court. This law, tragically, affects those trying to offer love and compassion to the homeless and marginalized, especially as we approach Thanksgiving.
This weekend, while many families celebrate with abundant meals, there are compassionate individuals who will venture into the streets to offer free meals to those less fortunate. Sadly, they will be pursued by by-law officers who enforce this regulation. Those trying to provide a simple meal will have to do so discreetly, watching for officers and making quick exchanges before hurrying away. The warmth of conversation and companionship—something that could brighten someone’s day—is often sacrificed for fear of getting fined.
Creating Dependable Support in Oshawa
At the heart of my work is a commitment to consistent, reliable support for those in need. I’ve started with something as simple as offering a free hug and engaging in positive conversations. These small acts of kindness open the door to bigger gestures, like providing a free meal or snack.
During my daily walks, where I cover 5-10 kilometres across different parts of Oshawa, I engage in meaningful conversations with those I meet. My goal is to check in, see how they’re doing, and be a dependable presence in their lives. This consistent, human connection is essential for building trust with the people I assist.
Unlike many outreach efforts, I don’t post pictures of the individuals I help. There’s no need. For those struggling with life, having their image taken while receiving assistance can be uncomfortable and undignified. By respecting their privacy, I’m creating an environment of trust, one conversation at a time. This small consideration goes a long way in restoring the dignity of those who feel unseen by society.
The Simple Power of Love and Compassion
My message is simple: if you find value in what I’m doing, support my efforts. Join me in creating a community where love and compassion lead our actions. The work I do brings me immense joy and happiness. My agenda is transparent—I want to bring more love and compassion into the world.
We can set aside politics and religion when it comes to helping others. Life is complex, and everyone is on their own journey, facing their own struggles. But we can choose to respond with love, without judgment, and without enabling harmful behaviours. Offering the basics of life—food, water, and kindness—can make a profound difference.
A Vision for Oshawa and Beyond
My dream is to continue providing consistent, meaningful support to those in need in Oshawa. It starts with small acts of kindness, but it has the potential to grow into something much greater. We can create a community where love truly is for everyone, where compassion is the driving force behind our actions.
Thank you for joining me in this journey. Together, we can make a difference—one hug, one conversation, one meal at a time.
LIFE – Love Is For Everyone!
