I’ve always loved using basil in my cooking—there’s something special even about just rubbing the leaves and enjoying the aroma.

Over time, I started to really notice how powerful that simple scent can be. After my stroke, especially in those first weeks and months, I experienced a lot of mood swings. One moment I felt okay, and the next I could feel quite low. I learned that this is a natural part of recovery—but I also discovered something that truly helped me in those moments.

Quietly, I began a small practice: I would gently rub fresh basil leaves and take a deep breath. Almost instantly, I would feel a lift in my mood. It didn’t solve everything, but it gave me a moment of calm, a reset, and a way to move forward with a more positive mindset.

Even today, I keep fresh basil close by for that reason. Whenever I feel I need a boost, it’s there.

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference. For me, growing and using fresh basil year-round in my apartment has become part of how I support my own health and well-being.
