Growing Another Path to Health & Wellness

Our next effort in supporting our community is Plant-Based Aroma Stones—but this is about much more than creating a naturally scented product.

It is another part of our growing approach to health and wellness, reducing barriers, learning what we can do for ourselves, and finding more uses for the plants we already grow.

We are beginning with plants such as Basil, Peppermint, Spearmint, Lavender, Sweetgrass and others, exploring how their natural aromas can become another part of everyday wellness.

🌿 Health & Wellness Can Take Many Forms

When we talk about plants and wellness, we often immediately think about consuming them.

For suitable edible plants, that is important. Growing herbs and other foods can provide nutrition, flavour and different plant compounds as part of our diet.

But wellness is bigger than nutrition alone.

Our surroundings, routines, opportunities to slow down, connection with nature, creativity and sensory experiences can all contribute to how we experience our everyday wellbeing.

Aroma gives us another way to interact with the plants we grow.

It doesn't replace eating nutritious food, physical activity, rest, medical care or any of the other things that contribute to health. It simply provides another option.

🌱 The Same Plant, Another Wellness Experience

Consider Peppermint.

We can grow it indoors. We can harvest it. We can use appropriate leaves for tea or food. Its characteristic aroma also comes from naturally occurring volatile compounds, including menthol and menthone.

Lavender provides another experience. Its familiar fragrance is associated by many people with relaxation and calming environments.

Basil provides nutrition and flavour while its many varieties can also offer very different natural fragrances.

Sweetgrass develops its recognizable sweet aroma particularly as it dries and also carries important cultural significance that should be respected.

These are different uses of plants, and they don't provide the same benefits.

Eating a suitable plant provides something different from smelling it.

That distinction is important.

We aren't trying to claim that smelling Basil provides the nutritional benefits of eating Basil or that an aroma stone treats a health condition. Instead, we are exploring how the plants we grow can support different parts of the wellness experience.

❤️ Creating Moments to Pause

There is another part of health and wellness that can easily be overlooked: the pause.

A familiar natural fragrance can become part of a quiet moment, a morning routine, time spent reading, resting after a walk or simply creating a more enjoyable space around us.

It doesn't need to be complicated.

Sometimes wellness is about the little things we can add to our lives that encourage us to slow down and become more aware of our surroundings.

Our Plant-Based Aroma Stones are being developed with that simplicity in mind.

No electricity is needed. No complicated equipment is required to use them. The stone simply sits within the space while gradually releasing its plant-based fragrance.

🌿 Growing Is Part of the Wellness

The health and wellness component doesn't begin with the finished aroma stone.

It begins with the seed.

Planting, watching something grow, caring for it, harvesting it, drying it and learning how it can be used are all parts of the experience.

Growing can encourage us to interact with plants regularly and learn more about where our food and natural materials come from.

Then there is creativity.

We take something we grew and ask, what else can we make with this?

That learning and creating are also part of what this project represents.

♻️ Wellness for Ourselves and Our Environment

Wellness also means thinking about the environment we live in.

Our goal is to develop these aroma stones using biodegradable materials and plants we can grow ourselves, rather than creating another product dependent on disposable plastic housings or electrical devices.

Eventually, the product has served its purpose.

What happens next matters too.

Reducing unnecessary waste while creating something useful is another part of the healthier community we are trying to build.

🌱 Reducing Barriers to Wellness

One of the biggest reasons behind this effort is accessibility.

Health and wellness products can become expensive very quickly. Even simple products are often marketed as premium wellness items.

That isn't the direction we want to take.

We want to learn what can be accomplished with plants that can be grown in small spaces, simple materials and methods that can eventually be taught and shared.

For those who cannot afford even the basic start, we continue working toward options that can reduce that barrier as well.

Health and wellness shouldn't become another opportunity available only to those who can afford it.

❤️ From Wellness to Community Support

If our testing works, Plant-Based Aroma Stones can serve another purpose too.

They can help support the community efforts we are building.

Our first goal is to develop a biodegradable aroma stone capable of maintaining a useful natural fragrance for a minimum of 30 days. We will grow the plants, create the stones, test them and document what actually happens.

From there, the goal is a 12-month fundraising effort, offering different plant-based scents and eventually different shapes throughout the year.

That creates a cycle where health, wellness and community support begin to connect:

🌱 Grow → 🌿 Harvest → ❤️ Create → 🧠 Learn → ♻️ Reduce Waste → 🤝 Support Community

Something we grow for ourselves can become something we learn from.

Something we learn can become something we share.

And something we create can potentially help support someone else.

💚 More Than an Aroma Stone

That is why Plant-Based Aroma Stones are about much more than fragrance.

They are another piece of a much larger effort to explore practical, affordable and accessible approaches to health and wellness.

We aren't saying one plant, one aroma or one product will make someone healthy.

We are creating options.

Options to grow.

Options to learn.

Options to create.

Options to enjoy what we grow in different ways.

And, ultimately, options that can help us support one another.

Health and wellness aren't one thing. They are many small things working together—and this is one more path we can explore.

Disclaimer

Plant-Based Aroma Stones are for fragrance and general wellness use and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent medical conditions. Natural fragrances can cause sensitivities or allergic reactions in some people. Use appropriate care around children, pets and anyone with fragrance, allergy or respiratory sensitivities.

Building With Purpose — Daily Posting Starting Soon

Just Oshawa is entering a new phase of community awareness: purpose-driven daily posting, built carefully, intentionally, and rooted in real community work.

All Just Oshawa content is created and organized within the ILFJL Collective—a central website that also functions as a private social network. This platform is the foundation for everything we do, allowing both public and private content to exist without ads, algorithms, or corporate interference.

The ILFJL Collective: Our Foundation

The ILFJL Collective hosts a central public newsfeed that shares the latest public updates from all community efforts, including:

  • Just Oshawa

  • FIFE – Food Is For Everyone

  • Not Just A Food Program

  • Inspiring Times

  • Other initiatives built to support health, wellness, and community connection

This shared newsfeed ensures transparency, consistency, and easy access to what is happening across the collective.

Just Oshawa: A Dedicated Community Feed

Within the ILFJL Collective, Just Oshawa has its own dedicated space.

Each Just Oshawa section includes:

  • A group space for community connection

  • A home tab showing the latest public Just Oshawa content

  • Highlighted updates drawn from various efforts that directly benefit the Oshawa community

This structure allows people to either explore the full collective or stay focused on Oshawa-specific activities—while keeping everything connected.

One Name, One Brand, One Community Focus

Across all external social platforms, content is shared under the same profile name: Just Oshawa.

Using one name and consistent branding:

  • Removes confusion

  • Builds recognition

  • Strengthens trust

When people see Just Oshawa, they know the content is local, intentional, and grounded in real community work.

Daily Posting Across 9 Social Networks

Daily posting across 9 different social networks will start soon for the Just Oshawa network.

Each day’s content will be drawn from the latest public updates within the ILFJL Collective and may include:

  • Community awareness and local stories

  • Highlights from FIFE, Not Just A Food Program, and Inspiring Times

  • Education, wellness, nourishment, and lived experience

  • Opportunities to connect, learn, and support Oshawa-based efforts

This is not about flooding feeds. It is about steady, purposeful visibility—showing up consistently with content that matters.

Focused Growth, Not Platform Chasing

We continue to research additional social networks, but each one is carefully evaluated. Time and energy are invested only where:

  • Community benefit is clear

  • Engagement is meaningful

  • Results justify the effort

Purpose comes before volume.

Why Daily Posting Is Done In Person

All Just Oshawa daily postings are done manually, in person, through a browser.

This choice is intentional.

We have seen that automated and AI-driven posting tools can:

  • Make mistakes

  • Miss local nuance

  • Strip meaning from community stories

  • Be shaped by corporate systems

Community work deserves care. Human posting ensures accuracy, respect, and integrity—especially when sharing real experiences.

Public Awareness, Private Community Space

Public social networks are used to raise awareness and invite people in. The private social network within the ILFJL Collective exists for:

  • Deeper conversations

  • Learning and education

  • Honest, respectful dialogue

  • Community growth without noise or hostility

Both spaces matter, and each serves a different purpose.

Built Slowly. Built Intentionally.

One collective foundation. Dedicated community spaces. One clear voice across many platforms.

Daily posting is not a shortcut—it is a commitment.

Building with purpose. Showing up consistently. Serving the Oshawa community with care.

Daily posting starts soon.

This Is Part of the Reason Why

This is part of the reason I am working toward the Wellness Without Barriers community space — not all of it, but an important part.

Real change doesn’t come from trying to help everyone at once. It comes from supporting a few individuals at a time, through graduated steps that build responsibility, confidence, and real-life skills. That approach leads to independence, not dependency.

Our current support systems are largely built around mass handouts without safe, practical options or education. While often well-intended, these systems rarely provide the structure needed for people who truly want to improve their health and wellness.

Too often people are told to “just garden,” without access to safe or realistic spaces. Community gardens are frequently damaged or stripped, leaving those who are trying to do better discouraged and exhausted. For people living in apartments, rooming houses, shelters, or unstable housing, there are even fewer options — and almost none that are year-round or effective.

Those with private space already have opportunities. Those without are left behind.

Wellness Without Barriers is being created to address this gap.

It is designed to offer:
• safe, indoor access to growing and wellness education • step-by-step support tied to increasing responsibility • practical, hands-on learning that leads to confidence and independence • a dignified path forward for those ready to make change

This space is not about rescuing people. It is about creating real options and real pathways to better health and stability.

Love and compassion are not just feelings — they are built into systems, spaces, and opportunities that actually work.

This is part of the reason I am doing this.

This Is Part of How I Plan to Fund Wellness Without Barriers

This is part of how I plan to fund the Wellness Without Barriers community space — not all of it, but an important piece of the foundation.

From the beginning, my goal has been to build funding methods that are independent, ethical, and rooted in community, rather than relying on large grants, political influence, or corporate control. Independence protects the purpose of the work and keeps decisions focused on real needs — not outside agendas.

That is why Crafted With Purpose and $3 – $2 – $1 – Free are being developed with intention. These are not just fundraisers — they are awareness-building tools that strengthen community connections while helping cover operational costs.

Through Crafted With Purpose, we provide a free online platform that promotes Oshawa makers, artists, and crafters. This creates visibility and opportunity without pay-to-play barriers. In partnership with local small businesses, we also use small in-store print displays and shared social media posts to raise awareness for both Crafted With Purpose and $3 – $2 – $1 – Free, helping everyone involved reach more people across Oshawa.

We have also created our own local fundraising model using products and services from within the community, with a percentage directly supporting our efforts. Every contribution stays local and supports real, on-the-ground work.

Awareness is built both online and in person. We have begun hosting weekly Open Chat events and will be expanding to small-group Open Chats to deepen conversations, grow awareness, and connect with people interested in volunteering or supporting the work.

At this stage, everything is:
• 100% volunteer-run • 100% donation-based • directly tied to operational expenses

As these efforts grow and reach a sustainable point, we will eventually need to hire staff. When that time comes, those roles will be filled by individuals progressing through the Not Just A Food Program and, later, the LIFE Transitional Housing Project — creating real pathways from support to employment and independence.

This is part of how I am building a sustainable, independent funding model for Wellness Without Barriers — designed to grow with the community and remain accountable to it.

The Cost of Noise Is Growing

As AI-generated content increases, so does:

  • Burnout

  • Distraction

  • Mistrust

  • Wasted effort

People are spending more time sorting through what’s fake than building what’s real.

That affects health and wellness.
It affects business.
It affects fundraising.
It affects community.

Verified Truth as a Form of Wellness

Clear information reduces stress.
Real interaction builds confidence.
Trust saves time and energy.

Human-verified spaces aren’t just about safety—they’re about well-being and productivity.

Building What Comes Next

We’re not trying to replace big platforms.

We’re creating an alternative:

  • No paywalls

  • No AI-generated content

  • No algorithmic manipulation

  • No selling trust

Just real people, real work, and real connection.

As the noise grows louder, spaces grounded in verified truth will become essential—not optional.

And that’s exactly what we’re building, together.

Verification Without a Price Tag

On our network, verification is free—but it’s real.

A verified badge hasn’t been purchased.
It isn’t automated.
It isn’t handed out by an algorithm.

A verified profile means one thing:

An admin has physically met that person.

No exceptions.

That human connection is what gives the badge its value.

Privacy Still Matters

We also recognize that not everyone can safely use their real name online.

That’s why:

  • Real names are not required

  • Privacy and anonymity are respected

  • People can participate safely

Verification is optional—but when you see it, you know it represents a real human being who has been met in real life.

Privacy and truth can coexist.

Independent Search, Real Content

We also take verification beyond profiles.

Content inside the network:

  • Is not AI-generated

  • Is not automated

  • Can be searched independently

  • Is posted by real people

This dramatically reduces spam, scams, and time-wasting noise.

It creates a space where trust can grow naturally.

Why “Verified” No Longer Means Verified

Most major social platforms now offer verification—for a monthly fee.

Pay the platform, get a badge.

But paying to appear legitimate doesn’t mean someone has actually verified who you are.

At the same time:

  • Spam accounts remain active

  • Scams continue to operate openly

  • Fake engagement is still rewarded

  • Automated content spreads unchecked

Why?
Because all of it creates activity, and activity generates profit.

Who Really Pays the Price

The real cost of this system isn’t money. It’s time, focus, and trust.

People trying to:

  • Improve their health and wellness

  • Build honest businesses

  • Run legitimate fundraising efforts

  • Support real community work

…are forced to compete with automated noise designed to keep people distracted.

The system doesn’t protect users—it monetizes attention.

Why We Refused to Follow This Model

We didn’t want verification to be something you buy.

We wanted it to mean something again.

That meant rejecting pay-to-play systems and designing a model based on human accountability, not subscriptions.

The Growing Problem With What We See Online

We are reaching a point where it’s becoming harder to tell what is real and what is fake online.

AI-generated content now fills social feeds—posts, images, comments, profiles, even conversations. Some of it is helpful. Much of it is not. And increasingly, it’s being used to imitate real people, fake engagement, and create the illusion of community.

The result is confusion, wasted time, and growing mistrust.

The biggest issue isn’t AI itself.
The issue is how easily it can be used to replace real human interaction.

When Noise Becomes the Norm

Most people don’t realize how much of what they scroll past each day isn’t created by a real person at all. It’s generated to keep you engaged, reacting, and scrolling.

That noise makes it harder for:

  • Real voices to be heard

  • Real causes to gain attention

  • Real businesses to reach people

  • Real community efforts to grow

When everything looks real, nothing feels trustworthy anymore.

Why This Matters Now

As AI content increases, trust becomes more valuable—and more fragile.

This is why we’re building spaces that slow things down, value human presence, and make room for content you can actually rely on.

This is only the beginning of the conversation.

Building Community and Supporting Local Businesses Through Verified Listings

Small businesses are the backbone of any community, and how we treat those most in need reflects who we are as a whole. At Just Oshawa, we believe that love is for everyone, and this guiding principle shapes everything we do. Our network is designed to uplift local small businesses, support individuals, and foster a compassionate community.

We actively gather and share content that our community will find valuable. By building a hyper-local network, dedicated entirely to Oshawa, we ensure that the content you see is verified and directly tied to Oshawa-based small businesses, groups, or organizations providing tangible support to the community.

Why Just Oshawa?

As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the community, we offer verified content so that when you see posts within our network, you know they originate from Oshawa. Whether it’s about a small business or an organization, you can trust it’s real, relevant, and focused on benefitting our local community.

While the network is hyper-local, its impact can go beyond Oshawa as others will naturally want to follow and engage with our content. This attention helps us raise awareness of various fundraising efforts, such as those under our LIFE Community Project. Our mission is rooted in universal values of love and compassion, transcending ideological boundaries and building an inclusive and supportive community.

Our Key Focus Areas

To offer continuous, no-cost support for local small businesses, we’re building regular features, including:

Our verified listings ensure that the businesses and organizations are genuinely based in Oshawa, with active participation in the community. Whether it’s a local restaurant offering a special deal or an organization providing essential services, our network shines a light on these valuable resources.

Escaping the Pay-to-Play Social Media Model

A key reason we built this network was to move away from the costly "pay-to-play" model seen on mainstream social media platforms. This model benefits large, well-funded groups while grassroots organizations and small businesses struggle to keep up. Instead of wasting resources on boosting posts, our funds and energy are focused directly on supporting those who need it most.

On our platform, there are no algorithms deciding what content you see. Unlike traditional social media, where mostly paid content makes it to your feed, Just Oshawa shows you everything in real-time, as it is posted. You have control over the content you see, whether it’s updates from friends, groups you’ve joined, or special deals from local businesses.

Additionally, our platform features ad space that directly supports fundraising efforts, ensuring that the money generated stays in the community and goes towards making a positive impact.

Supporting Small Businesses and the LIFE Community Project

We promote local small businesses and organizations across nine social networks to raise awareness for our Just Oshawa content. This approach not only increases visibility for Oshawa’s small businesses but also supports the LIFE Community Project’s mission of delivering aid without being burdened by expensive advertising costs.

By simply posting content from our fundraising activities, we are building reach and engagement that doesn’t rely on paying for every post. Over time, this will help us generate additional funds through ad space on our website while ensuring that no one’s content is pushed down in favor of paid posts.

How You Can Help

If you are a small business owner or community member in Oshawa, you can support our efforts by sharing content, becoming a member (membership is and will always be free), and actively engaging with the network. Members receive exclusive benefits like access to free draws, products, and other exciting offers.

Together, we can continue to grow this network and increase the benefits for everyone in our community. Just Oshawa exists to support local businesses, community members, and those most in need. Join us in making Oshawa a stronger, more compassionate place for all.

By adding the Daily search option and the by-meal type we know this will be a valuable tool to assist those most in need, more and more find themselves with food insecurities and we hope this will be helpful.

You will start to see more and more of our Oshawa Connections being added to the following listings: Bar/Restaurant/Venue, Oshawa Artist Marketplace, Group/Organization, and Small Businesses. One of the improvements we made was that we have a Downtown option with each category. You will find that as we add more content you will start to see more and more categories added. All content is verified to be in Oshawa, we do not post or share content that is not in or from Oshawa. We know how frustrating it can be to find Oshawa content, many of the groups say Oshawa but you find content across the Durham Region or other communities, just know that when we add content to Just Oshawa we verify the content to be Oshawa content, it that simple we are hyperlocal for Oshawa and maintain that objective at all times.

We will leave this update with the knowledge that we have started adding to the Pics In Oshawa and will find a variety of images and you can select from not just type of pics like Butterflies, and Landscapes but also the option by date taken. Again we verify that all images have been taken in Oshawa and the photographer's name is included with each pic. This will give you an idea that shortly we will be adding different photographers to the pics taken in Oshawa.

In the coming weeks, you will see posts about the LIFE Community Project, LIFE, Fundraising, and FIFE sections when we have these sections completed. Watch for more news as we complete the work and start the various projects/programs.
