Naringenin is a naturally occurring flavanone, a type of flavonoid found in fruits, vegetables and herbs. It is especially well known in citrus fruits such as grapefruit and oranges, but it is also found in tomatoes and a variety of other plants.
Naringenin is being studied for its potential role in antioxidant protection, inflammation, cardiovascular health, metabolism, and brain and nervous system health.
As with many plant compounds, much of the research is still developing. Naringenin is not a treatment or cure, but learning about it helps us better understand how the plants and foods we consume may contribute to overall health and wellness.
Normal metabolism produces reactive molecules known as free radicals or reactive oxygen species. Our bodies have natural antioxidant systems that help keep these molecules in balance.
When that balance is disrupted, oxidative stress can occur.
Naringenin has demonstrated antioxidant activity and is being studied f
Wellness Profiles — Polyphenols & Flavonoids
Hesperidin is a naturally occurring flavanone glycoside, a type of flavonoid found in plants. It is especially associated with citrus fruits, including oranges, mandarins, lemons and other members of the Citrus genus. The peel and white inner portion of citrus fruits can contain particularly concentrated amounts. Hesperidin is not limited to citrus, however; research has also identified it in several herbs and other plants.
Like many flavonoids, hesperidin is being studied for its potential role in supporting the body's antioxidant and inflammatory responses and cardiovascular health. Research is continuing, and the strength of evidence differs considerably depending on the health effect being studied.
Normal metabolism and environmental exposures continually produce reactive molecules commonly called free radicals. When their production exceeds the body's antioxidant defenc
Eriocitrin is a naturally occurring flavanone glycoside, a type of flavonoid within the larger family of polyphenols. It is also known as eriodictyol-7-O-rutinoside.
Eriocitrin is especially associated with lemons and peppermint. Research into this plant compound has focused largely on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and its possible role in metabolic health.
One of the best-studied properties of eriocitrin is its antioxidant activity. Antioxidants help protect cells against oxidative stress caused when reactive molecules overwhelm the body's antioxidant defences.
Laboratory research and reviews suggest eriocitrin can participate in antioxidant processes and may help reduce oxidative damage. This is one reason researchers are investigating its possible relevance to long-term metabolic and cardiovascular health.
Eriocitrin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in experimental research. Chronic infla
Vanillic acid is a naturally occurring phenolic acid, part of the larger family of plant compounds known as polyphenols. It is found in a variety of herbs, fruits, vegetables, grains and other plants.
Vanillic acid is chemically related to vanillin, one of the compounds associated with the familiar aroma and flavour of vanilla. However, vanillic acid is found in many plants beyond vanilla.
Within the Wellness Profiles, vanillic acid is included because research has explored its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other potential biological activities. As with many individual plant compounds, much of this research comes from laboratory and animal studies, so it should not be interpreted as evidence that vanillic acid can prevent or treat disease in humans.
The greater health and wellness value comes from consuming a varied diet containing many different plant foods and their naturally occurring nutrients and phytochemicals.
