Plants produce thousands of natural compounds that help them survive environmental stress, defend themselves against pests and disease, and respond to their surroundings. Many of these compounds also become part of the human diet when we eat herbs, vegetables, fruits, and other plant foods.
Rosmarinic acid is one of these compounds.
Despite its name, rosmarinic acid is not found only in rosemary. It occurs in many herbs, particularly members of the mint family (Lamiaceae), including rosemary, peppermint, basil, lemon balm, oregano, sage, thyme, self-heal, and bee balm.
